Speech Language Pathology Department
The Speech Language Pathology department is accessible at both St. James Mercy Hospital and Mercycare sites. A New York State licensed Speech Language Pathologist services clients at both sites for speech therapy and cognitive training related to disease or injury. Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) studies are offered at St. James Mercy Hospital with the cooperation of the radiology department.
Modified Barium Swallow Study A modified barium swallow study is a fast, painless, objective and tremendously useful tool in treating patients with dysphagia. Our goal is to develop a treatment plan that will help the patient to overcome his or her swallowing difficulty and essentially to avoid sacrificing quality of life.
Patients who have experienced a stroke, other neurological injury, head trauma or certain types of cancers may benefit from this study. Children with dysphagia may also benefit from this kind of study. Treatment of dysphagia will help with aspiration pneumonia prevention.
Referral and Contact
Patients will need a referral from a physician to be evaluated and treated by the Speech Language Pathologist. Contact Michael Crandall at (607) 324-6967 or (607) 324-6946 with any questions you may have regarding Speech Language Pathology services.
