Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program for people with chronic lung diseases like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease (COPD), Asthma, Emphysema, Cystic Fibrosis, Lung cancer, Sarcoidosis, Pulmonary Hypertension, those waiting lung transplants, or other lung conditions.

Why is Pulmonary Rehabilitation right for you?
If you have a diagnosis of chronic lung disease and have ongoing breathing and quality-of-life issues, you will likely benefit from going the program. The exercise will improve your breathing and functional ability. The education will improve your ability to care for yourself and the emotional support you receive will help you to cope with your condition.

The goal of St James Pulmonary Rehabilitation is to help our patients lead full, satisfying lives maintaining the highest functional capacity possible. Pulmonary Rehab can help by:

  • Decreasing your respiratory symptoms and complications
  • Helping you better understand and manage the physical and emotional aspects of your disease
  • Improve and maintain your physical conditioning
  • Reduce hospitalizations

Pulmonary rehabilitation is provided in two phases:

Phase II: Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation (covered by most insurance)
Phase III: (optional and self-pay)

What is included in the program?
Our program addresses many aspects such as medical management, exercise, breathing retraining, education, emotional support, and nutrition. Exercise is essential to improving the function of your heart and lungs, and to strengthen the muscles used for breathing.

What to expect:
The qualified staff of the Pulmonary Rehab center uses a holistic approach to your care considering your functional ability, health, and emotional needs. It starts with a consultation and evaluation with our pulmonary rehab specialist to see if the program is right for you. Once you join the program, you receive a written care plan that includes appropriate exercises, education, and emotional support.

The Pulmonary Rehab team is comprised of specialists who care for people with chronic pulmonary disease, including pulmonary physician, respiratory therapists, dietitians and trained registered nurses.

How long is the program?
Length of the program depends on your individual pulmonary diagnosis, but normal time line is 36 sessions spread over 12-20 weeks.

Insurance Coverage:
If you are referred to the program following an acute breathing episode, it is probable that your insurance plan will cover 36 sessions of pulmonary rehab (Level II services). Once your Level II sessions are completed, you can choose to continue the program on the maintenance basis (Level III services), and pay for the sessions out-of-pocket. We offer level II services at a greatly reduced rate. We can help you determine your insurance eligibility, as well as offer financial assistance for those who need it for both Levels of Rehabilitation.
